17. The Assessment, Development, and Nurturing of Global Leaders

Organizations are struggling to understand the ways in which globalization influences leadership. Research shows that one of the primary concerns of human resource professionals who operate globally is the dearth of managers who possess global leadership skills.  Developing global leaders is a major concern for many organizations. This workshop is designed to familiarize participants with the most recent literature examining global leadership and the current best practices for the development of global leaders.

Management consultants, in-house HR managers and trainers, not-for-profit organization members working in cross-cultural/global contexts, and educators whose teaching involves intercultural effectiveness in social and work settings.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
  • Review the current state of global leadership in both theory and practice
  • Understand the current realities of global leadership development in multinational corporations
  • Identify the multidisciplinary roots of global leadership as a theoretical construct and empirical phenomenon
  • Identify and compare various models of global leadership development
  • Identify the characteristics of global leaders based on the presenters’ comprehensive research
  • Learn how organizations can develop and support global leaders
  • Understand the connection between global leadership and expatriation
  • Develop tools for designing and conducting global leadership programs
  • Explore how effective leaders lead change in global organizations
  • Identify approaches for designing global leadership development programs in organizations
The highly interactive workshop will include:

Dr. Mark E. Mendenhall is the senior vice president of The Kozai Group, Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in global leadership, expatriate productivity, and assessment. He currently holds the J. Burton Frierson Chair of Excellence in Business Leadership at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. He held the Ludwig Erhard Stiftungsprofessur Chair at the University of Bayreuth, and is a faculty of member of the Europa Institut, the first MBA Program established in Germany. He is past president of the International Management Division of the Academy of Management. A scholar/consultant in global leadership development and the cross-cultural effectiveness of expatriate managers, Mark has published over 60 articles and chapters in academic and professional journals and books, and has authored/edited 16 books, the most recent being Global Leadership: Research, Practice, and Development.
 
Dr. Joyce Osland is a specialist in international management with a focus on global leadership, Latin America, and organization development. As the Lucas Endowed Professor of Global Leadership, Joyce founded the Global Leadership Advancement Center at San Jose State University. She has won numerous awards for teaching, research, and leadership, and has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Army Research Institute since 2005. Joyce has over 60 articles and chapters in academic journals and professional publications. She is currently working on the ninth edition of her two textbooks, The Organizational Behavior Workbook: An Experiential Approach and The Organizational Behavior Reader. She has lived and worked overseas for 14 years in 7 different countries, mostly in Latin American and West Africa, and continues to be a visiting professor in graduate programs all over the world.
