7. Experiential Methods and Tools for Facilitating Intercultural Competence

This workshop focuses on intercultural competence development and provides methods and tools for practitioners to facilitate the growth of their learners. Actively engaging with several well-grounded and widely used methods and approaches to intercultural communication competence, such as Cultural Detective®, and communication styles, this workshop equips participants with creative approaches to training and coaching for both culture-general and culture-specific knowledge and skills. Through the exploration of Values Lenses, critical incidents, strategies for building bridges across cultures, and tools for leveraging communication style differences, participants can expect to be creatively, experientially, and reflectively engaged.

Trainers, educators, managers, consultants, coaches, international education program professionals, counselors, and other intercultural practitioners who wish to enhance their intercultural competence development training/teaching/coaching skills. Participants in this workshop should have a basic knowledge of intercultural communication concepts as well as some experience with presentation and facilitation.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
  • Explore creative approaches to intercultural teaching and learning
  • Gain knowledge of intercultural discovery tools and applications
  • Explore ways of facilitating intercultural conflict resolution for individuals and teams
  • Understand themselves as cultural entities and gain insights into the effect they have on others in interactions
  • Strengthen their facilitation skills by mastering  a variety of new tools and concepts
  • Broaden their knowledge of intercultural communication theory and its application to practice of training, teaching, or coaching
These will include:
  • Participation in a variety of experiential activities
  • Lecturettes and group discussion
  • Working on group projects that address specific strategies for various intercultural audiences
  • Structured self-exploration
 
Dr. Basma Ibrahim DeVries is an associate professor of communication studies at Concordia University in Minnesota. Basma also provides intercultural and diversity training and consultation to corporate clients, educational institutions, and community organizations and leads annual student travel and service-learning groups to Egypt and Mexico. Most recently, she returned from her post as Intercultural Learning Circle Coordinator and faculty member aboard the inaugural semester-long voyage of The Scholar Ship, where she was responsible for overseeing the intercultural competence development of students, staff, and faculty from 50 countries. Basma co-authored the book, Communication Highwire: Leveraging the Power of Diverse Communication Styles and Cultural Detective® Egypt. Basma served on the national board of SIETAR-USA and is a founder and coordinator of SIETAR-Minnesota.
Tatyana Fertelmeyster  
Tatyana Fertelmeyster is the founder and principal of Connecting Differences: Training, Facilitation, Consulting and Coaching. She provides intercultural communication and diversity training to corporate clients, educators, and mental health professionals both nationally and internationally. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, her professional experience includes providing resettlement services to refugees and counseling to individuals and families going through cultural transitions. Tatyana is a co-author of Cultural Detective® Russia and a master trainer of facilitators for Cultural Detective®. She currently serves as a director of Cultural Competency Programs for Jewish Child and Family Services of Chicago, where one of her responsibilities is training refugee services professionals nation-wide. Tatyana is a past president of SIETAR-USA.
