It's Summer Institute Time Again!

The 35th annual Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication (SIIC), July 13-29, 2011, at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, is just around the corner.

This year we are adding 12 new faculty members and 15 new classes to our already extensive offerings, including the latest in innovative training strategies, more choices in professional development, and an even greater focus on emerging global leaders - India and China.

In addition to over 40 in-depth workshops in one-day, three-day, and five-day formats, SIIC also offers two service-learning options, the SIIC Fellows Program (formerly the Intern Program) and the New Interculturalists Program. These two programs are for those who desire an intense professional immersion experience. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, or know someone who is, please contact us by phone or email. The staff at ICI also welcomes a chance to answer your questions and advise on workshop selection.

Details about the Summer Institute and our other programs are now available at  http://www.intercultural.org/siic.php.

Assessment, Tools & Resources

Do you need a method for assessing the intercultural competence of your students, staff, or faculty?
The Intercultural Effectiveness Scale provides an inexpensive way to assess the intercultural skills and characteristics of your group. There is no qualifying seminar necessary, and the inventory is readily available online. Each participant receives rich feedback about the assessment.

Training:
Are you looking for a new, stimulating way to train students or staff about cultural value contrast?
The Cultural Detective provides culture-specific training materials for over 55 cultures.  While Cultural Detective reflects the complexity of comparing and contrasting cultural responses, the easy-to-use materials require no trainer certification. They include critical incidents that are culture specific, and complete guidelines conducting and debriefing the activities.

Culture-Specific Assessment Profile:
Do you need a readily accessible way to learn more about the cultures you interact with?
GlobeSmart  provides rich, country-specific information for you to compare and contrast the cultural dimensions of 65 countries. Students can use it to prepare more substantially for their experiences abroad, comparing their own profiles to intended destinations, as well as to other members of their cohort. Aperian Global is offering GlobeSmart at a special reduced rate for students.

Diversity and Inclusion Training Modules:
Have you been asked to include diversity in your program, but you’re not sure where to start?

The Global Competencies Inventory (GCI)
and
The Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES)
from the The Kozai Group, Inc.
2011 GCI Qualifying Seminars

July 22-24 • Portland, Oregon (during SIIC)

The Kozai Group is composed of leading scholars and consultants in areas of intercultural and international education, research, training, and consulting.

The GCI measures personality characteristics associated with working effectively across cultures in an organizational environment, and is predictive of higher levels of performance in international assignments, increased intercultural skills, and greater job satisfaction. Qualifying Seminars are required to prepare professionals to use the GCI.

The IES is a streamlined educational version of the corporate GCI, and has been designed specifically to assess students’ personality characteristics that have been associated with effective behavior in intercultural contexts. Teaching aids are available for the IES, although purchase of the IES does not require certification.

Qualifying Seminars are 2-1/2 days and open to trainers, consultants, and coaches who want to use the GCI. This seminar will help participants understand the development, interpretation, and methods for using the GCI to create a development plan for clients. The seminar also reviews the development and use of the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES). ICI LOGO SCAN
